Hot Heels!

Looking to add some sizzle to your style?

Steve Madden

Swapping out the sneaks or flats for some height will make an instant impact.  I hit Steve Madden, BCBGMAXAZRIA and Aldo to check out the latest looks.

An animal print, heeled bootie, like the style below from Steve Madden, can elevate a denim and casual, long sleeve tee look and play equally well with a skirt or dress.

Steve Madden will get your ready for a night on the town!

Black and gold, paired together, as seen on the buckled cut-out bootie above and on the looks below from BCBGMAXAZRIA, are hot coupling!

There are shoes that become accessories to outfits and outfits that accessorize shoes. There’s no doubt —  a pair like this one deserves to inspire the rest of your outfit. Note the merge of ladylike and mod detail with lace and studs.

Here’s another take on the lace look from BCBGMAXAZRIA.  These pumps exude elegance.

Next stop — Aldo. Love the buckle detailing.  An unexpected color like merlot can almost be treated as a neutral. It pairs well with black, brown, grey, navy and a number of other hues. This look almost feels like the merging of a bootie and pump.

Have the winter blues? Combat them with more blue! Cobalt is getting lots of mid-winter play and popping up in clothing and accessories.  This standout style is also from Aldo.

Pop of Cobalt

Here’s another twist on an animal print look. These booties, with a zebra patterned heel, also feature a stylish open toe.

If any of these heels could move into your closet, which ones would you pick?

Here is a link to more NYE looks. Plus, coming up tomorrow, I’ll have New Year’s Eve accessories and ideas for entertaining at home.

New Year’s Eve Looks!

27 Dec

What are you wearing to ring in 2014?

Whether you want to do just a sprinkle in some sparkle or go full glam, you’ll find festive looks around the mall.

I hit Caché and BCBGMAXAZRIA to get some ideas. I’m seeing lots of combinations of black, white, silver and gold along with some bold colors!

At Caché, I spotted these timeless faux fur shrugs. Pair them with anything from a sequined top and jeans to cocktail dresses, like the ones seen here. Shrugs will give you mileage for years to come and add just the warmth needed as you dash from the car to the party, restaurant or club.

Screen Shot 2013-12-26 at 10.13.20 AM

Go glam with a shrug

Turn heads in a bold hue like red! This beaded Blouson dress features a draped neckline and fitted skirt with standout beading.

Beaded & Bold

I also saw several options with separates, which give you extra flexibility when it comes to just how dressed up you want to get. With a sequined skirt, such as the one below, I would keep the top simple. If you want to sparkle on top, then a solid bottom balances out the look. You can dress these looks up or down with your selection of shoes and accessories. A bootie keeps the looks less formal and sandals or pumps will take it to a dressier level.

At BCBGMAXAZRIA, you’ll find styles in all lengths! If you usually go for a LBD, how about trying a Little White Dress? Gone are the days when white gets packed up post Labor Day. A solid dress like the white one below provides a canvas with endless opportunities for expression with shoes and accessories.

The longer gowns have an old Hollywood feel. We’re seeing lots of ladylike detail, with fur and lace, along with edgier looks, such as the pairing of the leather moto jacket with the black gown.

This season, any length goes. While floor length gowns are typically more formal, we’re seeing the lines blur more often. Shorter dresses can be dressed up with accessories and longer ones can be dressed down, as done with the leather jacket above.

With the two styles below, all eyes will be drawn to the waist line. If you’re not sure what style dress you want to try, consider a fit that highlights a part of your body that makes you feel most confident.

GURU Tip: It always pays to ask a store associate  for assistance. Some styles take on a completely different look when taken off the hanger.

Coming up this Sunday (12/29), tune into WBAL-TV in the 7 am half hour to see three hot looks for New Year’s Eve! I’ll be back with New Year’s accessories on Monday (12/30).

GURU Style Star: Maria Stauffer

14 Nov

This week’s GURU Style Star, Maria Stauffer — is strutting a color combo I never thought about coupling — grey and navy.

Meet Maria

Maria pieced together her look from a number of stores at Towson Town Center. The cardigan and turtleneck are Macy’s finds. She scored her grey leggings at Express and her navy suede boots from Nordstrom. The jewelry is from New York & Company and Caché.

Screen Shot 2013-11-13 at 11.21.18 AM

“I like classic pieces, but I like to incorporate some trendy fashions,” describes Maria of her style. “I love fashion.  I’m addicted to clothes.”

What styles are you enjoying this season?

For this season, I do like the fact that I can wear a lot of leggings with boots, expecially with winter coming, to keep it comfortable but trendy.

What are the most treasured items in your closet?

I’m into a lot of jackets. I like the jackets with a lot of personality, and I keep them in every color. You can dress them up or dress them down. I like shoes.
What is your favorite store at Towson Town Center and why?
One of my favorite stores is BCBGMAXAZRIA just because I think it has a lot of the classic styles that will never go out of style and also adds edge. That makes it a little more appealing and more unique.
Tell me about the best piece of fashion advice you have ever received?
Don’t overload your look. Less is more. You don’t need to really wear hundreds of pieces of jewelry. I try to always keep it  in proportion.

Cutout Shoe Styles

30 Oct

Once upon a time ago all of my more skin baring shoes  —other than a classic pump or peep toe  —  were banished to the back of the closet come late fall.

Now, things are getting so much more interesting.  Cutout shoe styles are hot for fall!

Check out these pairs from Aldo (Level 3)  For the buckle style, available in grey and black, along with the cutouts between each buckle, there is a second cutout by the heel.  The t-strap pair gets finished with a peep toe.  The metallic flat style takes on its own version of the cutout with the open side.  The power red suede style is a head turner with its triple buckle strap, open top and peep toe.

I noticed more cutout styles at BCBGMAXAZRIA (Level 2), including unexpected cutout styling on this riding boot!

Unexpected cutout detailing

This pair is all about detail with the gold metal on the strap, the black and green colorblocking and the cutouts created by the t-straps. This shoe comes in green and black or black and white.

Check out these suede pumps from Johnston & Murphy (Level 2).  The gabardine band is equally about comfort and fashion. It creates the cutout style and offers added support.

Move over Neutrals — Check out all the Colorful Leather Looks!

16 Oct

Brown & Black, you’re facing some stiff competition. Have you noticed all the bold colors out there when it comes to leather looks? With faux leather and authentic leather options, you can find the style at a wide range of price points.

I spotted this faux leather power jacket at Macy’s. The red and animal print make a head turning pairing.

At BCBGMAXAZRIA (level 2), this deep green jacket is described as “moto meets rock and roll!”

Are there any trends you want to read about on this blog? Let me know. I would love to hear from you.

15 Oct

I wore them growing up.  THEY’RE BACK. BIG TIME and were named a hot trend earlier this month on Good Morning America. I’m talking about sweater skirts!

I found the look at BCBGMAXAZRIA  (Level 2) — along with all kinds of sassy sweater styles, including dresses, leggings and jackets.  Consider pairing a skirt like the Albie Feather Cascade Jacquard A-Line one with a feminine flowy top. You can add a contrast to the classic vibe of the skirt with a modern bootie.

You can also style a skirt like this one with a peplum top.  The lace detail and necklace can take the sweater skirt look from day to night.

Create a third  look for your sweater skirt by adding on a leather jacket.

Leather adds a mod look to your sweater skirt

Or, opt for a cropped jacket and let your top peek out for added impact. This cropped jacket features leather detailing and can be worn as outerwear during this transitional season and can keep you warm inside as we hit winter.

This Jacquard pattern, which plays up the black and white trend,  comes as a sweater dress or a pencil sweater skirt.  Pop in a colored top with the skirt or continue with the black and white theme.

At BCBGMAXAZRIA, sweater pant styles are also in the spotlight.

Bold in Black & Navy Blue

1 Oct

I remember a couple of years ago when a good friend returned from a trip to Paris and told me that everyone was pairing navy with black. I had always thought it was a fashion faux pas and now — well, it’s growing on me…

I spotted this color coupling in collections at BCBGMAXAZRIA (level 2) and Ann Taylor (level 4).

Check out this moto jacket from BCBGMAXAZRIA with standout textured detailing.

Here’s a closer look at the triple textured patterns.

The classic jacquard pattern on the next two looks from BCBGMAXAZRIA takes on an edgier personality with the black and blue color combo on the top and dress below.

Over at Ann Taylor, the Hourglass Sheath Dress caught my eye. The hourglass colorblocking couldn’t be more figure flattering. The white paneling draws the eyes straight to the waist.

I showed these two looks from Ann Taylor during our GURU Fall Trends Event.  A sheer top like this one, pictured over a cami, can be worn with a pencil skirt and pumps for work and skinnies and wedges for night.

Fall Trends!

What trends are you most excited about for fall?

Let me know if there is a trend you want to try and don’t know how to work it into your look? I’m here to help.

Take Cover in Style: GURU Spotlight on Outerwear

23 Sep

It feels like with the flip of a switch, fall is now in the air — especially in the early morning and evenings.

I’m starting to see more jackets and coats popping up in stores all around the mall.

I spotted the Constrast-Sleeve Tweed jacket at BCBGMAXAZRIA (level 2). It has an asymmetrical zipper-front with a tweed front and faux leather sleeves and detailing. A jacket like this one will keep you warm outside during the fall and come winter can be worn inside as a standout layering piece.

People StyleWatch spotlighted White House Black Market’s (level 2) Tweed Wrap Coat. It features a flattering belted waist and the lapels can be brought in closer to the neck in cooler weather.

At Johnston & Murphy (level 2), all outerwear is 15% off though October 8th. Animal print is everywhere for fall. Here it’s done on an A-line raincoat.

I didn’t realize at first that this Johnston & Murphy men’s  jacket, with interior suede detailing, is outerwear.  It’s just the right weight for a fall transitional piece.

I’ve had the same long puffer jacket for the past five winters. I love the warmth but am well aware that the silhouette is far from flattering. That couldn’t be further from the case with this standout belted puffer from Express (level 3).

Here’s a sportier puffer look. The Thermoball Hoodie from The North Face (level 2) comes in many colors and is designed to keep you warm, even during stormy weather.

For him, the Decagon 2.0 jacket at The North Face caught my eye. The mustard and orange have a fall feel. This is the kind of jacket that can fit the bill on adventures around town and on the slopes!
