GURU Style Star: Allison Melocik

16 Jan

Chances are you won’t guess why Allison Melocik chose to wear this outfit today…

Meet Allison Melocik

Meet Allison Melocik

On the day we met, she and her grandmother were walking through the mall after having lunch at the Cheesecake Factory.  Allison selected the outfit for this day, because it was from her grandmother.

IMG_2045

Allison’s chambray button-down and plaid skirt are from J. Crew. Her tights are from Nordstrom Rack.  Her boots, with exposed zipper trim and red piping, are by Steve Madden and from Macy’s. Allison’s infinity necklace is from Tiffany & Co.  Her bag and watch are both Fossil finds. Allison’s layered bracelets are by Alex & Ani. Some of them are from Nordstrom.

Describe your style.

Whatever I like. Whatever catches my eye. I like patterns.

What are your favorite stores in the mall?

Free People and J. Crew. I do mix stuff from those two locations.

What trends are you enjoying most this season?

I like bright colors. Big Sweaters.

Who is your style icon?

I don’t have one. I just wear what I like. If it catches my eye, I’m going to wear it.

If you could go back in time to any decade for the style, which one would you pick and why?

Probably the 1970s, where they just wore the sweatpants and leg warmers all day. That would be pretty awesome.

GURU Style Star: William Daly

9 Jan

This week’s GURU Style Star describes his style as “vintage with a modern twist.”

Meet Goucher student, William Daly! He’s had a teacher call him 19th century. Fellow students joke around and call him “professor.”

William Daly

William’s khaki’s are from Vans. He liked the two pairs he bought there just before the holidays so much that he came back to the mall for two more on the day I met him. This time, he saved $20 on each pair, thanks to promotional coupons he received after his first purchase.

William scored his oxford shoes at Nordstrom. His belt is J.Crew. His jacket and vest are thrift store treasures.

Vintage Style with a Modern Twist

Here is our Q&A.

What is your favorite store at Towson Town Center?

Right now, I like Vans a lot because of all the deals. They have some of the best fitting pants that I’ve tried on in a while.

What trends do you like?

I’m hoping vests will make a comeback. I love vests.

Who is your style icon?

I like the Mumford & Sons (An English folk  band).  They are really good at bringing back pieces that might seem dated individually but incoroproating them in more of a modern style. They wear a lot of vests and bow ties.

If I gave you $1,000 to spend on anything at the mall, what would you buy?

I would like to get 100 $10 gift cards and give them out to people in the mall… If I could add an additional stipulation, I would tell them to spend $5 on themselves and $5 on someone else…

GURU Style Star: Vanessa Nadolny

19 Dec

I am a magnet for animal prints! I can’t get enough of them. I caught this week’s GURU Style Star, Vanessa Nadolny, out of the corner of my eye as she was headed into Ann Taylor. Right away, I noticed her sophisticated, layered look with animal print, a standout purple bag and more purple highlights with her accessories.

Meet Vanessa

Meet Vanessa

Vanessa’s statement faux leather jacket is from New York & Company. Her white blouse, peeking out from under her animal print sweater, is J.Crew. She is carrying a Michael Kors bag. Her belt is Lucky Brand.

Now to our Q & A.

Describe your style:

Eclectic, a little bit from all eras.

What are you shopping for at the mall today?

I was supposed to be finding my father a sweat suit for Christmas, and here I go in every store I like. I did find my son dark brown khakis in the Gap. It’s all he wants for Christmas. (Her son is 17.)

What trends are you excited about this winter?

I like what’s trendy, but I feel like I’m always a season behind.

What made you pick this outfit today?

I love these boots and belt, and I just pair them with anything…

What are you favorite stores in the mall?

J.Crew, Ann Taylor. I like to mix both of those.

What is the most important fashion lesson you’ve ever learned?

Don’t throw anything out. Mix the old with the new; it alway comes back around.

What is the most treasured item in your closet?

Either my Michael Kors purse collection or these boots.

GURU Style Star: Samantha Kosmas

5 Dec

This week’s GURU Style Star, Samantha Kosmas, shows how a few accessories can really pull together a casual look.

Screen Shot 2013-11-27 at 6.07.21 PM

Samantha layered a comfy cardi over a plaid shirt and tied the look together with a Justice statement necklace, with an unexpected floral touch. She’s had the necklace for a long time. Note the Greek eye symbol on one of her bracelets. Samantha says it’s a symbol that brings good luck. She scored it at Fire & Ice and found her cross bracelet at Nordstrom. Her ring is also from Fire & Ice.

Screen Shot 2013-11-27 at 6.09.20 PM

Describe your style:

Definitely whatever I can find in my closet, very casual. I kind of do a little bit of everything. Some days I’m preppy; some days I am hipsterish. Just whatever mood I’m in is what I tend to do.

What is your favorite store at Towson Town Center and why?

Probably PacSun because they have a lot of really cute stuff at ths time of year. I just love all of their layering pieces and jackets.

What styles are you excited about for the winter season?

I love the Aztec thing that’s going on with the long sweaters. I’m asking for one for Christmas. I love combat boots too. I have two pairs at home.

What is the most treasured item in your closet?

Probably, my boots. I have two pairs of boots that I wear constantly. One is these (the ones pictured) and combat boots. They can go with everything during the winter.

What celebrities do you admire for their style?

I love Jennifer Love Hewitt’s style. I wear a lot of preppy styles when I’m going to church or dressing up to go out. I also love Vanessa Hudgens hippy-boho style.

GURU Style Star: Sam Armstrong

21 Nov

Sam Armstrong’s pinstripe vest caught my eye. I’m used to seeing men wear a button down and khaki uniform and find it refreshing to see a different style!

Meet Sam Armstrong

Meet Sam Armstrong

Sam’s vest is from Express. His button-down is Banana Republic. His khakis are American Eagle. He’s had his Doc Martens for years.

This Morgan State grad student came to the mall to shop for an outfit for an architectural presentation. He found this green button down with elbow patches, pants and patterned socks from J. Crew.

Sam's Finds from J. Crew

Sam’s Finds from J. Crew

Here’s our Q&A:

Describe your style:

I would say a little bit city, mostly country. (He adds that’s about 75% country and 25% city.) I like to keep it laid back, mostly earthy colors.

What trends do you like?

I really like J. Crew’s suits. The Ludlow Collection. It fits my style really. The colors are a brownish-tint.

If I gave you $1,000 to spend on anything at the mall, what would you buy and why?

I saw this bag tonight at J. Crew. It was a messenger bag that I really wanted, but it’s just too much.

What is the best fashion advice that anyone has ever given you?

Be yourself.

What is your most treasured item in your closet?

I have an old t-shirt that has been washed so many times that it just feels great.

GURU Style Star: Romisa Clark!

18 Jul

It’s a style that would have looked amazing 10, 20 or even 30 years ago and will likely still hold its own decades from now.

There’s something to be said for weaving timeless pieces into your wardrobe. Meet this week’s GURU Style Star Romisa Clark!

Romisa Clark

Romisa Clark

Romisa is wearing a subtle striped, linen Apron dress from J. Crew (Level 4) with yellow embroidery on the cap sleeves.  Her five strand pearl necklace is also a J. Crew score, as are her casual cobalt flip-flops. Keeping in line with the classically feminine, flirty style of her dress, Romisa pulled her hair back with two bobby pins. She completed her look with her periwinkle Hermes watch.

Screen Shot 2013-07-15 at 8.55.26 PM

Romisa is the store manager at Talbots (Level 4). You’ll usually  find her donning something from Talbots! She tells me that for fall, she is excited about the continued black and white trend, more colorblocking, leather, animal print and all the arm candy! I featured this black and white shift from Talbots in a recent blog post.

You can wear a dress like this year-round!

You can wear a dress like this year-round!

Now on to our Q&A….

Describe your style:

My style is classic and timeless with a hint of trend, but the trend is more of the fabric and the color for the season and I have my own signature look

What is your most treasured item in your closet?

These five strand pearls. I just think they elevate any look. I can wear them dressy or casual.

Pearls are a staple in Romisa's wardrobe!

Pearls are a staple in Romisa’s wardrobe!

If you were to encourage a woman to do three things to freshen her wardrobe for fall, what would you suggest?

A classic black dress, a high boot, and a great scarf. The scarf is chic to wear over the dress, attached to the handbag or over your coat.

Romisa adds that it’s important to start off with the correct fit and to play with accessories. “You can wear the same clothes every week with a different accessory. You reinvent yourself every time,” she suggests!

GURU Style Stars: Amy, Emerson & JoAnn

9 May

With Mother’s Day around the corner, I’ve been keeping my eyes peeled for Mother-Daughter pairs to feature as GURU Style Stars. I was excited when I spotted an even better find — three generations!

Meet Amy, Emerson, 4, and JoAnn! Love the pink — especially on a dreary day.

And yes, this trio paid a little visit to Lilly Pulitzer! That’s why they came to Towson Town Center on this day. Amy and Emerson live in Howard County, and JoAnn is from Catonsville. I’ll show you what’s in two of the bags in a moment…

DSC05654

Amy, Emerson and JoAnn

JoAnn, Amy’s mom and Emerson’s grandmother, scored her pink rain coat at Gap. It really pops over her navy cardi, white tee and jeans.

Three Generations!

Amy’s python print sweater and jeans are both J.Crew finds. Her necklace is from Ann Taylor. Her turquoise bag is Michael Kors.

On this shopping trip, JoAnn bought Amy and Emerson these matching Lilly Pulitzer dresses as birthday presents!

Mother & Daughter Dresses

Mother & Daughter Dresses

Now for our Q&A:

Describe your style:

Amy: Casual, comfortable clothes with a little bling! I always wear jewelry.

JoAnn: I would say I’m more conservative, preppy.

What are your favorite stores at Towson Town Center?

Amy: Lilly Pulitzer and J.Crew. I like J.Crew for my everyday. Lilly for dress up, especially for summer!

JoAnn:  I like Talbots and J.Crew.

How do you two influence each other’s style?

Amy: I would say now I influence her. Years ago she influenced me more. I keep her up to date on new styles while keeping her dress age appropriate.

JoAnn: I do have some taste she can’t take credit for all of it.

Amy: You do have good taste, mom.

How have you influenced Amy’s style?

JoAnn:  I’ve influenced her to be a shopper because I’ve always been a shopper.

Amy:  I would say the biggest influence is you always told me to dress appropriate and not to be a showy person, not to wear revealing clothes.

Amy, who is also a mom to two boys, ages 6 and 8, is having her family over for a cook out on Mother’s Day. Do you have your Mother’s Day shopping done? Here are links to gift ideas for handbags at Michael Kors; gift sets from L’Occitane, LUSH Fresh Handmade Cosmetics and Yankee Candle; and jewelry at Tiffany & Co. Cheryl’s fun, sophisticated and colorful layered look, topped off with a flattering cream coat, caught my attention. Her hot pink cardigan and navy long sleeve tee are from J. My SHOPPING SPREE with BALTIMORE MAGAZINE Sweepstake’s Winner!

31 Aug

When Mollie Young saw a Tweet from Baltimore Magazine to win a $250 shopping spree at Towson Town Center with me, she clicked on the link and entered on a whim — never imagining that she would be the ONE randomly chosen!

She was in the staff room at work when an email with the news appeared in her inbox. “I screamed… I was shocked”  Mollie adds, “It was just really funny. We had just been talking about how I need to add more color to my wardrobe.”

Meet Mollie

Mollie moved to Baltimore last year from Mississippi for a job at Johns Hopkins, where she works as a child life specialist in pediatric radiology. She helps young patients understand their medical diagnoses, prepare for their medical procedures and extends support to their families.

Mollie, who has focused on an overall health transformation over the past year and is rebuilding her wardrobe with clothes that  fit better, realized that she wore mostly black and little color.  “When I would wear color, people would comment, ‘You never wear color!'”

She started wearing more color this summer and is ready for even more!  “I feel like it matches my personality,” she shares. “I think I’m a lot more of a colorful person!”  Not to mention — a brighter style couldn’t be more fitting for a job working with children!

Mollie and I met up on a recent Saturday morning for our shopping spree and started at Gap — where you’ll find denim in just about every color!

Layered tops are on trend!

We hit the store at the right time!  Mollie was given 40% off her purchase during a “Friends and Family” invite that occurs three times yearly.

Here, Mollie’s layered tops make a perfect pairing with the turquoise ankle zip leggings (regularly $69.95).

Any color tee adds a great pop under the striped top!

The base layer green tee above takes on a completely different look in this next outfit. Love the Electric Fuchsia Broken In Straights teamed up with the yellow in the scarf and shoes with the pop of green peeking out of the Fitted Boyfriend Shirt (regularly $49.95). The sunny leather ballet flats and scarf tie the elements together.

The scarf and shoes anchor the look.

We scored this striped tee on the clearance rack. Here’s it’s seen with an Electric Fuchsia Khaki Mini Skirt.

The top is a clearance rack score!

The Nautical Shift Dress (regularly $59.95)  creates an instant blank canvas, where you can add in any color. You can get a lot of mileage out of this dress with different scarves, belts, shoes and jewelry.

Mollie loved this dress so much that she picked up a second one in navy with cream stripes.

With the 40% off, Mollie’s $250 Shop Etc. Mall Gift Card stretched far and covered the majority of her purchase.  She went home with three pairs of pants, three dresses, a button-down, two tees, two scarves and a hot pink purse!

Mollie’s Treasures!

Mollie was thrilled with all of her finds and endless possibilities for combining her new pieces.

Two bags, many outfit combinations!

While we exhausted Mollie’s gift card for the shopping spree at Gap, Mollie also happened to have a J. Crew gift card in her wallet. We headed there next and found this animal print belt. I have a feeling it will quickly become a wardrobe staple. It would play well with the Gap striped dresses!

Animal print belt from J. Crew

She also picked out these standout stud earrings and a cobalt peplum top.

Standout Studs from J. Crew

Peplum top  from J. Crew

We walked out of the J. Crew  and ended up returning about two minutes later, as this bold red skirt was still on Mollie’s mind!  It’s now part of her wardrobe, too!

Mollie’s final find of the day!

With purchases in hot pink, bright green, red, cobalt and yellow, you would never know that Mollie once backed away from color.  Knowing you want more color is one thing and wearing it is another!  Click play below to hear from Mollie about what went through her mind before she tried on all the bright clothes!

I should also mention that every single color that Mollie tried on looked amazing on her! Congrats to Mollie on the shopping spree. Stay in touch and let me know how you are enjoying your new wardrobe!

GURU Style Star: Miranda Weinstein

19 Jul

On a recent triple digit day, I couldn’t help but notice Miranda Weinstein’s LWD (Little White Dress)!  Even though common sense tells me light colors will keep you cooler, I somehow reach for one of my zillion black tops most days.   This week’s GURU Style Star is inspiring me to try to find my own LWD for hot days.

Love Miranda’s strapless one! The belt — a Macy’s find — completes the look that Miranda describes as “preppy summer.”

She came to the mall for a birthday shopping spree, with Mom doing the buying! Miranda, if you’re reading this, let us know what you scored!

Happy 20th to you!
