GURU Style Star: Allison Melocik

16 Jan

Chances are you won’t guess why Allison Melocik chose to wear this outfit today…

Meet Allison Melocik

Meet Allison Melocik

On the day we met, she and her grandmother were walking through the mall after having lunch at the Cheesecake Factory.  Allison selected the outfit for this day, because it was from her grandmother.

Allison’s chambray button-down and plaid skirt are from J. Crew. Her tights are from Nordstrom Rack.  Her boots, with exposed zipper trim and red piping, are by Steve Madden and from Macy’s. Allison’s infinity necklace is from Tiffany & Co.  Her bag and watch are both Fossil finds. Allison’s layered bracelets are by Alex & Ani. Some of them are from Nordstrom.

Describe your style.

Whatever I like. Whatever catches my eye. I like patterns.

What are your favorite stores in the mall?

Free People and J. Crew. I do mix stuff from those two locations.

What trends are you enjoying most this season?

I like bright colors. Big Sweaters.

Who is your style icon?

I don’t have one. I just wear what I like. If it catches my eye, I’m going to wear it.

If you could go back in time to any decade for the style, which one would you pick and why?

Probably the 1970s, where they just wore the sweatpants and leg warmers all day. That would be pretty awesome.

GURU Style Star: William Daly

9 Jan

This week’s GURU Style Star describes his style as “vintage with a modern twist.”

Meet Goucher student, William Daly! He’s had a teacher call him 19th century. Fellow students joke around and call him “professor.”

William Daly

William’s khaki’s are from Vans. He liked the two pairs he bought there just before the holidays so much that he came back to the mall for two more on the day I met him. This time, he saved $20 on each pair, thanks to promotional coupons he received after his first purchase.

William scored his oxford shoes at Nordstrom. His belt is J.Crew. His jacket and vest are thrift store treasures.

Vintage Style with a Modern Twist

Here is our Q&A.

What is your favorite store at Towson Town Center?

Right now, I like Vans a lot because of all the deals. They have some of the best fitting pants that I’ve tried on in a while.

What trends do you like?

I’m hoping vests will make a comeback. I love vests.

Who is your style icon?

I like the Mumford & Sons (An English folk  band).  They are really good at bringing back pieces that might seem dated individually but incoroproating them in more of a modern style. They wear a lot of vests and bow ties.

If I gave you $1,000 to spend on anything at the mall, what would you buy?

I would like to get 100 $10 gift cards and give them out to people in the mall… If I could add an additional stipulation, I would tell them to spend $5 on themselves and $5 on someone else…

I’m a big fan of pattern play! This week’s GURU Style Star, Whitney Neale, pairs a paisley print top with a pony hair, animal print bag!

Read on for our Q&A:

What words describe your style best?

Trendy, fashion forward, chic fashionista.

What is your favorite store at Towson Town Center and why?

Probably  H&M. They always have good sales. I definitely like their styles. You can go from casual to night out.

What are your favorite trends of the moment?

I do like print on print — Mixing paisley with the animal print. I just have a fetish for shoes. The tall boots. I’m really into the over the knee boots right now.

What is the best piece of fashion advice you’re received?

Don’t be afraid to step out of your box. A lot of people don’t like to wear a lot of colors or mix colors.

What is the most treasured item in your closet?

I have some Givenchy boots. They come up above my knee and have a little wedge heel. I love them. They’re versatile; you can wear them in the winter or the spring. You can wear them with a dress, leggings or shorts.

What is your fashion resolution for 2014?

I always buy shoes. I feel like I have a lot of shoes but I don’t have a lot of clothes. To focus more on clothing pieces and not shoes.

GURU Style Star: Vanessa Nadolny

19 Dec

I am a magnet for animal prints! I can’t get enough of them. I caught this week’s GURU Style Star, Vanessa Nadolny, out of the corner of my eye as she was headed into Ann Taylor. Right away, I noticed her sophisticated, layered look with animal print, a standout purple bag and more purple highlights with her accessories.

Now to our Q & A.

Describe your style:

Eclectic, a little bit from all eras.

What are you shopping for at the mall today?

I was supposed to be finding my father a sweat suit for Christmas, and here I go in every store I like. I did find my son dark brown khakis in the Gap. It’s all he wants for Christmas. (Her son is 17.)

What trends are you excited about this winter?

I like what’s trendy, but I feel like I’m always a season behind.

What made you pick this outfit today?

I love these boots and belt, and I just pair them with anything…

What are you favorite stores in the mall?

J.Crew, Ann Taylor. I like to mix both of those.

What is the most important fashion lesson you’ve ever learned?

Don’t throw anything out. Mix the old with the new; it alway comes back around.

What is the most treasured item in your closet?

Either my Michael Kors purse collection or these boots.

Style Session with $100 Shop Etc. Mall Gift Card Winner!

1 Nov

If you had a $100 Shop Etc. Mall Gift Card to spend at Towson Town Center,  what would you buy?

Rebecca Peterson, who won a $100 gift card and styling session with me in a drawing at our Fall Trends event and I hit the mall recently to spend her prize. I’m amazed by how far the gift card stretched!

Meet Rebecca

Meet Rebecca

Rebecca scooped up two accessories in the Nordstrom BP department — a  whimsical Love bracelet and a majorly marked down, triple horseshoe pendant on a chain.

Screen Shot 2013-10-27 at 8.52.41 PM

Our luck continued as we hit Forever 21. Rebecca scored this white studded handbag. It was a tough call whether to take it home in black or white. She made her decision after finding a studded black wristlet in the clearance section for just $6.99. An amazing steal! “It’s a nice bag for any night out,” she says. “You can wear it anywhere and fit your essentials in it or as a wallet inside of a bag…”

Along with two new trendy bags, Rebecca also went for an “Every woman is a rebel” logo tee and a graphic print dress.

Forever 21 Finds

“Most of my dresses are summery. It’s nice to have something long sleeve,” says Rebecca of the black and white dress. “It’s really comfortable and I can pair it with leggings to wear to work.” Rebecca works in customer service in an office setting.

A Successful Shopping Trip

A Successful Shopping Trip

Rebecca reports that her favorite places to shop at Towson Town Center include the BP department at Nordstrom, Nordstrom Rack and Forever 21.

All of our finds from our styling session fall into the trendy black, white and gold theme. Rebecca, I hope you have fun mixing and matching your new accessories into your wardrobe and that you enjoy wearing the statement top and dress.

Are you facing any shopping challenges? Let me know in the comment section and I just may invite you out for a styling session.

Here’s our Q&A:

Describe your style:

I like to represent my mood and personality on any given day. I think it’s one of the best ways to represent who you are with the blink of an eye… It defines who you are. You represent yourself as classy, not sassy.

What trends are you excited to try this fall?

I like a lot of color. I like a lot of textures. I love a lot of designer clothes. I’m a designer shopper.

Tell me about the most treasured item in your closet.

I have several. I have this hot, spicy yellow Jessica Simpson dress. It’s sexy but not over the top. It’s classy and an eye catcher. That’s one of my favorite outfits in my closet right now that I don’t want to give to anyone.
What are your favorite stores in the mall and why?
I think my whole closet right now is furnished by Macy’s. They have a lot of brands and designers that I like. I like Macy’s. Nordstrom. I like their return policy. If I don’t like something, I can return it fairly easily.
Tell me about the most valuable style lesson you’ve learned and who taught it to you?
I would say my mother. That lesson is less is more. Simple beauty. Be natural. Look at your features and enhance what you have. I think that exudes natural beauty.

GURU Style Star: Kristy Toney

10 Oct

I admire anyone who seamlessly can pull together pieces from multiple stores and create a look that’s not cookie-cutter. I noticed Kristy Toner’s blazer first and then how she curated her complete look, accented with pops of Ravens purple!

Kristy is a mom of two and a teacher at George Washington Carver Center for Arts and Technology.

Meet Kristy

Meet Kristy

Kristy is wearing a corduroy blazer with bow detailing from Ann Taylor over a navy top with wide-leg grey trousers from New York & Company. She finished her look with a pair of purple wedges.  It’s on trend to wear white after Labor Day!

Love the purple wedges!

Yes, she purchased her shoes with the Ravens in mind! Kristy added on multiple purple accessories as accent pieces —  including this standout ring.

Describe your style:

It’s very eclectic. I like to pull things together from all kind of places. I don’t just shop at one store. I pull together a lot of different pieces — just whatever feels right. I love color.

Working in a school for the arts, color is a great thing. I love classic pieces that you can mix and match that work with just about everything. I do like White House Black Market for that reason. They have a lot of nice, classic pieces that you can utlize.

I always love a good wedge and a great heel. I wear heels all the time. I’m excited that the season for boots is coming.

I never go without jewelry. I think that accessories really make or break an outfit. I think anything can be dressed up with a little bit of jewelry; so accessories are key.

I constantly rotate out my purses except for today I didn’t have time. I have a huge closet. I converted a room to a closet. It is very neatly organized. It is my sanctualry. I love it. I love going in there.

What is your favorite store in the mall?

I like Nordstrom a lot. I think because they carry so many different things.

For my daughter, I love Justice. I think it is so much fun. We’re here all the time in Justice.  She can’t get enough. I can’t get enough for her… She is a little style icon herself. She has an eye for fashion. She thinks she is a little diva. She is constantly creating her own look. She is pulling [pieces] together — mixing and matching. She is really coming into her own right and her own style, which is really fun.

What is the most treasured item in your closet and why?

I have a really amazing antique purse that was passed down from a couple of generations that my mom gave me when I was younger. It’s a small black evening bag. I treasure it. I use it for so many occasions.

What trend are you most excited about for this fall?

The boots.  I love the boots. I like the more rugged looking, mid-calf, flatter style boot. I’m glad we’re taking it down a notch from the heeled boot. Thankfully the Uggs are gone, even though I do like them for lounging around or running outside. I like my heeled boots and things like that. These new boots are great for running aroud, going to a nice fall fest. It’s a great look with a pair of jeans. It’s a great look with a blazer. It’s nice. I love them in the different shades of brown.

GURU Style Star: Lisa Van Bavel

19 Sep

Lisa Van Bavel’s head turning look caught my attention. I was sitting at a table working on a blog post when I noticed her out of the corner of my eye and had to find out about her style! Turns out this week’s GURU Style Star is a personal stylist for Nordstrom and a former model.

With her multiple patterns at play, a creative display of accessories and two-tone booties, Lisa exudes confidence and charisma!

Her alice & olivia stretch skinny jeans give off a camo meets snake pattern feel and are also from Nordstrom. That’s also where she scored her denim jacket.

Lisa brings a second pattern to the mix with her Anthropologie button-down. It features khaki silk threading and bead embellishments. The Michael Kors python print bag adds a third pattern. It can be worn as a cross-body or carried by its handles. It is also from Nordstrom.

Now to our Q&A….

Describe your style.

I see my style as a mix of chic, bohemian, and adventurous.

What is a piece of fashion advice you have for other women?

I think they should think about who they perceive themselves to be, who they would like to be and how that’s always a possibility and to lose the fear of stepping outside their realm of comfort.

What do you enjoy about your job as a stylist?

Establishing long lasting relationships, having fun with clients and introducing them to a new side of themselve that was an inner side and now can be an outer side.

What trends are you excited about for fall?

Leather.  Although it’s classified as a trend, leather is timeless… It’s a timeless piece as a skirt, a pant, a jacket or a vest. The possibilities are endless.

Lisa also encourages people to not be afraid to mix high and low end clothing and accessories.

Statement Necklaces for a Steal from NORDSTROM!

17 Sep

A statement necklace can make an entire outfit.

Popping in a color, gold or silver tones with a necklace is one of my favorite ways to change up the look of a top or dress.  The Nordstrom BP Department houses a treasure trove of statement necklaces for a steal!

All the ones featured in this post are $24 or under each!

This aqua multi-level necklace can pair up with just about any color — cobalt, magenta, red, orange, yellow, green — you get the idea. It also performs with patterns and can do wonders for that little black dress or crisp white button-down.

Check out just a few of the ways you can style this coral necklace. Sometimes it’s tough to imagine how a necklace may work with your look.  I find that your can get more creative with your pairings by holding up a necklace to different tops or dresses.
