“Four Truths and a Dare” at SEPHORA! Plus, a special treat with purchase for 10 people

14 Jan

Forget about Truth OR Dare.

In this case it’s Four Truths AND a Dare and refers to a collection of oils for your skin at Sephora.

Let’s start with the Dare — “Dare to Oil.” If you have oily skin, you may assume that you could never use oil on your skin. That’s one of many misnomers about oil, reports manager, Amber Wilhelm.

Sephora

A number of cultures around the world have used oil for centuries, shares Amber. When you walk into Sephora, you’ll find a display touting four truths about oils.

Truth #1  — you can cleanse with oil.

Truth #1

Truth #1

It never would have occurred to me that you can wash your face with oil. I had only heard about its moisturizing properties (we’ll get to that later). I took home a sample of the Boscia Tsubaki Cleansing Oil-Gel and am hooked. It’s gentle and has a subtle refreshing scent. A tiny bit goes a long way.

Oil Cleanser

“It isn’t going to strip the skin of the natural oils. It’s especially great for someone on an acne medication, someone who has really sensitive skin, or someone battling winter dryness,” describes Amber.  This oil not only cleanses but also serves as a makeup remover and is hydrating.

Truth #2 – “You can fight oil with oil.” Amber admits that because she has oily skin, she was afraid to try oils at first. She explains that our skin recognizes the oil products as being its own oils. If you have oily skin, she says the oils can help make your skin less oily and can help fight clogged pores. If you have dry skin, it can help hydrate. The oils serve as a balancing tool, depending on your needs.

Truth #2

Truth #2

When I mentioned to a few people that I was trying out oil products, the first reaction tended to be “Will it make your skin greasy?” That’s the subject of Truth #3. I confess I had the same concern. Sure enough, my skin seemed to inhale each of the oil products I tried without any greasy shine.

Truth #3

Truth #3

One friend even asked if I started doing something different with my makeup. The only shift I made was adding in oils to my routine.  I think it’s the glow I received from trying out the fresh Seaberry Moisturizing Face Oil, which contains a number of oils including Seaberry, cranberry seed, camilla seed, grape seed and sweet almond. Seaberry oil, which is from Siberia, has long been used as a natural cure. In fact, the co-founder was treated as a young child with Seaberry oil to help heal a burn.

Boosts Radiance

Oils also have anti-aging properties. Some products are more geared in this direction and are packed with anti-oxidants to help diminish the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. If you are looking for an anti-aging oil, be sure to specifically mention that to a Sephora skincare consultant. That’s Truth #4.

Truth #4

Amber reports that she noticed that the oils have helped to soften the appearance of fine lines. She also shares that the Josie Maran line of oil products was inspired after the model met a woman in Morocco who was in her 70s but looked three decades younger. It turns out she was using oil based products.

Josie Maran’s Argan Oil can be used on the face, hands, body (try adding a few drops to your bath) and even scalp. It comes in a light and regular formula.

Available in regular and lighter formulations

GURU TIP: You can use the oils on their own or you can add a few drops to your current moisturizer or face wash. It’s all about experimenting to see what works best for you.

If you take up Sephora on the Dare to Oil challenge, a skincare consultant will help you figure out which ones will be best for you. You can pop in and experience a Skincare Consultation Service with oils and other skincare products and take home a sample.

Plus, the first 10 people to mention the GURU when making ANY purchase at Sephora will receive a deluxe sample bag of oil products. Must be 18 or older. Good while supplies last.

Manager Rachel Gonzalez tells me that the formula is what makes this polish unique. “One coat goes further than any polish you’ve seen,” she says. She adds that it is long lasting and dries fast. The polishes range from $10.50 to $14.50 a bottle. It’s also Toulene Free, Formaldehyde Free and DBP Free.

The product line’s tag-line is “Performance X Play” and refers to the long wear, shine, faster drying time along with the “color domination” and explosive nail effects. The polish brush is designed to give you an even and precise application.

The FORMULA X line also includes a full system including products to cleanse, prime and shine the nails.

What color polish are you favoring for fall? Let me know. I’m falling for Merlot.

GURU Tip: If you’re not sure how to pair contrasting colors in a statement necklace with your outfit, you can get ideas from mannequins and from how colors are paired in patterns in clothing.

At Sephora, we checked out the Color IQ technology. Sephora and Pantone, the world’s leading authority on color, teamed up to launch technology that can find a foundation color match to your skin tone.

What’s your Color IQ? New technology arrives at Sephora

4 Sep

As you know, the right color foundation can do wonders. It can even out your skin tone, cover fine lines and even shave off some years! The wrong color — that’s another story…

Sephora and Pantone, the world’s leading authority on color, teamed up to launch an exclusive technology. At Sephora (Level 2), you can now have your Color IQ determined in less than two minutes! It’s all to figure out what shade of foundation matches your skin.

What's your COLOR IQ?

What’s your COLOR IQ?

Here’s how it works. A Sephora makeup artist will remove your makeup and moisturizer and will take three pictures of your skin using this special camera. If you are planning to pop in and get your COLOR IQ done, you’re encouraged to come in without makeup or moisturizer.

Three pictures are taken.

Three pictures are taken.

Then, the technology assigns your skin a Pantone shade number. A makeup artist plugs in the number on an iPad and suggested shades of foundation come up. Every single foundation at Sephora has been matched up to a Pantone shade number.

Suggested Shades

Suggested Shades

“Everyone is so afraid of foundation because it looks fake or cakey or they have the line on the neck. When you have the right shade and it blends in, it looks flawless, it’s able to give you a much more polished and pulled together look,” says manager, Rachel Gonzalez. Rachel calls this technology, which is owned by Sephora, amazing. “It has yet to make a mistake. We’ve had it for a month and it has yet to disappoint anyone. It matches anybody.”

DSC00448

The technology assigns three numbers to each person. One is based on a range of 1 to 15 — from light to dark skin. The two other sets of numbers go from 1 to 7  look at your yellow and pink undertones. “You would be surprised at the difference a shade or two of yellow or pink can make,” says Rachel.  After getting her own Color IQ done, foundations were suggested that she had never considered using and she now wears a new one.

Your makeup artist will look at the suggested products and will talk with you to determine what brand and kind of formula — liquid, powder, or balm — will be the best for you.

I tried out the foundation pictured on the left below. It is close to the shade I’ve worn before, and I’ll likely try it next. Following the foundation, Laura, the makeup artist, suggested a coordinating blush and bronzer.

My new look, thanks to Laura!

It’s free to get your COLOR IQ done. No appointment needed. Have you tried it it out yet? If you do pop in for your own test, let me know how it goes…

Before I sign off, I wanted to let you know about an opportunity to join the Sephora team. Sephora is hosting a holiday job fair on 9/13 and 10/4 with open interviews from 2 to 7 pm at the Towson Town Center store. Applicants must come with a printed resume, complete with references.

Sephora is looking for candidates for temporary positions to run throughout the holiday season and into early 2014.  Applicants must have 2 years of retail experience, as well as 1 year in their current position.  All applicants must have open availability on Saturday and Sunday (flexible schedules during the week), as well as all holidays (Thanksgiving week, Christmas Eve, New Years Eve/Day). The position offers a great hourly rate, bonus potential, free product, education, and so much more!  Cosmetics experience is not required.

Hot Nail Trends for 2013 from Sephora

7 Jan

I admit that I’m far from adventurous when it comes to nail colors. I usually stick to a burnt red or a neutral hue.

That all changed when I walked into Sephora (Level 2) the other day and felt inspired to try a daring new shade!

In celebration of EMERALD being the color of 2013, green is the IT nail hue at Sephora.

The Greens

The Greens

With so many shades, it’s easy to find one that flatters your skin tone.  These polishes range from $9.50 to $14.50 each.

Go Green!

Go Green!

A new trend is to paint one finger on each hand in a slightly different shade. At the suggestion of Sephora’s in-house “Nail Queen,” AKA assistant manager, Rachel Gonzalez,  I tried out a cheery matte green on all my fingers and topped a single finger on each hand with green glitter.

Or, try painting all your tips in green glitter.  Patterns are also hot! Check out this look!

D-I-Y Nail Art

D-I-Y Nail Art

If you’re not ready to go completely GREEN or just want to mix things up, try doing part of your nail in a shade of green and then add on a contrasting shade — like a hot pink, purple or orange.

Bring on the Bling with a Nails Inc. kit. This is the Romance themed one. Along with the polishes, it comes with 3D crystal bows and  Swarovski crystals as well as the glue and small application stick. This embellished look would really pop over green nails!

Bling It On!

So, would you try green on your nails? Let me know what you think about this hue!

Pantone, the world’s leading authority on color, named Emerald the color of 2013. Pantone also released its hot colors for spring. Here’s a link to my post on the palette.
