Hot Heels!

17 Jan

Looking to add some sizzle to your style?

Steve Madden

Swapping out the sneaks or flats for some height will make an instant impact.  I hit Steve Madden, BCBGMAXAZRIA and Aldo to check out the latest looks.

An animal print, heeled bootie, like the style below from Steve Madden, can elevate a denim and casual, long sleeve tee look and play equally well with a skirt or dress.

Steve Madden will get your ready for a night on the town!

Black and gold, paired together, as seen on the buckled cut-out bootie above and on the looks below from BCBGMAXAZRIA, are hot coupling!

BCBGMAXAZRIA

There are shoes that become accessories to outfits and outfits that accessorize shoes. There’s no doubt —  a pair like this one deserves to inspire the rest of your outfit. Note the merge of ladylike and mod detail with lace and studs.

Here’s another take on the lace look from BCBGMAXAZRIA.  These pumps exude elegance.

Next stop — Aldo. Love the buckle detailing.  An unexpected color like merlot can almost be treated as a neutral. It pairs well with black, brown, grey, navy and a number of other hues. This look almost feels like the merging of a bootie and pump.

Have the winter blues? Combat them with more blue! Cobalt is getting lots of mid-winter play and popping up in clothing and accessories.  This standout style is also from Aldo.

GURU Spotlight: Boxy Styles

13 Jan

Boxy silhouettes are an emerging trend! We’re seeing this cut for winter and it is sure to springboard into warmer weather (yes, it’s not that far off in the future!).

Have you seen the Pretty Little Liars Collection at Aeropostale? This collection, inspired by the hit show, features several boxy jackets.

DSC_0294

Aeropostale

The styles in the collection are created with different characters from the show in mind. This navy cropped jacket, with white piping, can take you through the rest of winter and into warmer temps. Wear it casually with a plaid or other patterned button-down, a sequined tee, or put it to work with a more conservative top for a casual Friday. It has a boxy shape when worn open. Or, button up for a more fitted silhouette.

Boxy & Cropped

Boxy & Cropped

Neutral is nice, but bright is bold! A boxy faux leather jacket, like this one, is a fun accent piece and can pair with more colors than you may first imagine. Turquoise plays well with neutrals along with many brights! Think canary yellow, orange, even red.

Faux leather is hot in colorful hues!

Check out this fun topper. It plays well with just about any dress or top.

Forever 21 is also featuring the boxy silhouette. An animal print jacket like this one can take any outfit from ordinary to standout. Wear it now in place of a sweater and as outerwear as we get closer to spring.

Cheers to three trends in one — boxy shape, animal print and sequins. Wear a cropped sweater like this one from Forever 21 with any color long sleeve fitted tee.

The boxy trend is also turning up at Gap. Note the cut on this casual colorblock sweater. It’s available in multiple hues.

A touch of grey adds a softness to your wardrobe. Like some of the other jackets, one like this can be used inside now and outerwear later.

Some of the boxy styles are more form fitting than others.

GURU Tip: If you’re doing a looser boxy top, balance the style with a fitted bottom.

What do you think about this trend?

Eye on Embellishments!

10 Jan

Embellishments are EVERYWHERE!

I’m not talking about fictitious additions to statements made in conversation, but the sequin and stud kind.

If your winter wardrobe and accessories could use a makeover, try mixing in some embellished pieces. You can take on this trend full force, as seen on the denim below, or if subtle is more your style — there are also toned down takes on the trend.

Buckle

Jeans with embellished back pockets are hot sellers at Buckle!

You can schedule a free appointment to have a Buckle stylist help you find the most flattering denim fits for you.  After you share your style and sizing, you can arrive to a dressing room full of possibilities — including tops and accessories to mix in with your jeans.

At Buckle, you’ll find sequins sprinkled everywhere — on shoes, belts, and tops!

Check out these belts! The key is to not go overboard. If you do a sequined belt, I would save the sequined top or shoes for another day.

Sequins instantly elevate a tee. The sequined tee trend continues at Love Culture. This top takes on two trends. Animal prints, as in the animals themselves and not just leopard print, are IN this winter. They’re popping up on tops and sweaters.

If you want to go for a more subtle take, how about a studded handbag or clutch. I spotted these two in the sale section at Love Culture.

GURU Tip:  Take your outfit from desk to dinner by starting the day in black pants and cardi or blazer. Shed the work style tops for the evening and rock a standout sequined or studded top. No one will know your wearing the same pants.

What words describe your style best?

Trendy, fashion forward, chic fashionista.

Probably  H&M. They always have good sales. I definitely like their styles. You can go from casual to night out.

What are your favorite trends of the moment?

I do like print on print — Mixing paisley with the animal print. I just have a fetish for shoes. The tall boots. I’m really into the over the knee boots right now.

What is the best piece of fashion advice you’re received?

Don’t be afraid to step out of your box. A lot of people don’t like to wear a lot of colors or mix colors.

What is the most treasured item in your closet?

I have some Givenchy boots. They come up above my knee and have a little wedge heel. I love them. They’re versatile; you can wear them in the winter or the spring. You can wear them with a dress, leggings or shorts.

What is your fashion resolution for 2014?

I always buy shoes. I feel like I have a lot of shoes but I don’t have a lot of clothes. To focus more on clothing pieces and not shoes.

This week’s GURU Style Star, Samantha Kosmas, shows how a few accessories can really pull together a casual look.

Samantha layered a comfy cardi over a plaid shirt and tied the look together with a Justice statement necklace, with an unexpected floral touch. She’s had the necklace for a long time. Note the Greek eye symbol on one of her bracelets. Samantha says it’s a symbol that brings good luck. She scored it at Fire & Ice and found her cross bracelet at Nordstrom. Her ring is also from Fire & Ice.

Screen Shot 2013-11-27 at 6.09.20 PM

Describe your style:

Definitely whatever I can find in my closet, very casual. I kind of do a little bit of everything. Some days I’m preppy; some days I am hipsterish. Just whatever mood I’m in is what I tend to do.

What is your favorite store at Towson Town Center and why?

Probably PacSun because they have a lot of really cute stuff at ths time of year. I just love all of their layering pieces and jackets.

What styles are you excited about for the winter season?

I love the Aztec thing that’s going on with the long sweaters. I’m asking for one for Christmas. I love combat boots too. I have two pairs at home.

What is the most treasured item in your closet?

Probably, my boots. I have two pairs of boots that I wear constantly. One is these (the ones pictured) and combat boots. They can go with everything during the winter.

What celebrities do you admire for their style?

I love Jennifer Love Hewitt’s style. I wear a lot of preppy styles when I’m going to church or dressing up to go out. I also love Vanessa Hudgens hippy-boho style.

What trends do you like?

I really like J. Crew’s suits. The Ludlow Collection. It fits my style really. The colors are a brownish-tint.

If I gave you $1,000 to spend on anything at the mall, what would you buy and why?

I saw this bag tonight at J. Crew. It was a messenger bag that I really wanted, but it’s just too much.

What is the best fashion advice that anyone has ever given you?

Be yourself.

What is your most treasured item in your closet?

I have an old t-shirt that has been washed so many times that it just feels great.

Holiday Looks at Lilly Pulitzer

19 Nov

We’ve all been there. You’re racing around trying to find a dress at the last minute to wear to a holiday dinner or party. Think about all the times you may have settled for something that you wouldn’t have purchased if it weren’t last minute.

With so many holiday looks already out, now is the time to get a jump on things and stave off the stress of last second shopping.

I hit Lilly Pulitzer (Level 2). You’ll find festive styles to wear next week to Thanksgiving dinner (can’t believe it’s already next week) and looks that will take you through the holiday soiree circuit.

A dress such as the Kariana Sweater Shift Dress can take on multiple looks, depending on how you wear it. Pop on different statement necklaces such as the Sweetheart Necklace in black or the turquoise Bubbly Necklace.

Or, you can accent the Karianna with a belt, such as the In a Twist Belt in gold metallic above.

The Tropic Top in Metallic Vintage Brocade adds instant festive flair to a black pant, pencil skirt or even skinny jean. Dress it down with a cardigan, keep it more business with a blazer or wear it on its own.

The Deanna Maxi Dress in Bamboo Geo Lace is one of those rare dresses that you can bring out all year long! Here, this navy number is paired with a gold metallic Murphy Wrap in The Swims Jacquard and the In a Twist Belt in True Navy. You can also top it with a cardigan to make the look more casual.

Lilly Pulitzer also has sweet picks for your little girl. Meet the Adele Sweaterdress in Take off Stripe and the Rue Sweaterdress in black Skippy Scallop Intarsia. Note the adorable purple bow on the back of the Rue Sweaterdress.

Coming up tomorrow, I’ll have game suggestions that you can play at your family holiday gatherings from Marbles: The Brain Store.

GURU Style Star: Maria Stauffer

14 Nov

This week’s GURU Style Star, Maria Stauffer — is strutting a color combo I never thought about coupling — grey and navy.

DSC_0068

Meet Maria

Maria pieced together her look from a number of stores at Towson Town Center. The cardigan and turtleneck are Macy’s finds. She scored her grey leggings at Express and her navy suede boots from Nordstrom. The jewelry is from New York & Company and Caché.

Screen Shot 2013-11-13 at 11.21.18 AM

“I like classic pieces, but I like to incorporate some trendy fashions,” describes Maria of her style. “I love fashion.  I’m addicted to clothes.”

What styles are you enjoying this season?

For this season, I do like the fact that I can wear a lot of leggings with boots, expecially with winter coming, to keep it comfortable but trendy.

What are the most treasured items in your closet?

I’m into a lot of jackets. I like the jackets with a lot of personality, and I keep them in every color. You can dress them up or dress them down. I like shoes.
What is your favorite store at Towson Town Center and why?
One of my favorite stores is BCBGMAXAZRIA just because I think it has a lot of the classic styles that will never go out of style and also adds edge. That makes it a little more appealing and more unique.
Tell me about the best piece of fashion advice you have ever received?
Don’t overload your look. Less is more. You don’t need to really wear hundreds of pieces of jewelry. I try to always keep it  in proportion.

Style Session with $100 Shop Etc. Mall Gift Card Winner!

1 Nov

If you had a $100 Shop Etc. Mall Gift Card to spend at Towson Town Center,  what would you buy?

Rebecca Peterson, who won a $100 gift card and styling session with me in a drawing at our Fall Trends event and I hit the mall recently to spend her prize. I’m amazed by how far the gift card stretched!

Meet Rebecca

Meet Rebecca

Rebecca scooped up two accessories in the Nordstrom BP department — a  whimsical Love bracelet and a majorly marked down, triple horseshoe pendant on a chain.

Screen Shot 2013-10-27 at 8.52.41 PM

Our luck continued as we hit Forever 21. Rebecca scored this white studded handbag. It was a tough call whether to take it home in black or white. She made her decision after finding a studded black wristlet in the clearance section for just $6.99. An amazing steal! “It’s a nice bag for any night out,” she says. “You can wear it anywhere and fit your essentials in it or as a wallet inside of a bag…”

Along with two new trendy bags, Rebecca also went for an “Every woman is a rebel” logo tee and a graphic print dress.

Forever 21 Finds

Forever 21 Finds

“Most of my dresses are summery. It’s nice to have something long sleeve,” says Rebecca of the black and white dress. “It’s really comfortable and I can pair it with leggings to wear to work.” Rebecca works in customer service in an office setting.

A Successful Shopping Trip

A Successful Shopping Trip

Rebecca reports that her favorite places to shop at Towson Town Center include the BP department at Nordstrom, Nordstrom Rack and Forever 21.

All of our finds from our styling session fall into the trendy black, white and gold theme. Rebecca, I hope you have fun mixing and matching your new accessories into your wardrobe and that you enjoy wearing the statement top and dress.

Are you facing any shopping challenges? Let me know in the comment section and I just may invite you out for a styling session.

I hit Call it Spring (Level 3) to check out the bootie selection. Whether you’re looking for something edgy, sleek and sophisticated or more conservative, you’ll find a style for you.

Note the metal studded detail on this blocked heel bootie. Embellishments on boots, bags and on clothing are everywhere this fall.
