“Four Truths and a Dare” at SEPHORA! Plus, a special treat with purchase for 10 people

14 Jan

Forget about Truth OR Dare.

In this case it’s Four Truths AND a Dare and refers to a collection of oils for your skin at Sephora.

Let’s start with the Dare — “Dare to Oil.” If you have oily skin, you may assume that you could never use oil on your skin. That’s one of many misnomers about oil, reports manager, Amber Wilhelm.

A number of cultures around the world have used oil for centuries, shares Amber. When you walk into Sephora, you’ll find a display touting four truths about oils.

Truth #1  — you can cleanse with oil.

Truth #1

Truth #1

It never would have occurred to me that you can wash your face with oil. I had only heard about its moisturizing properties (we’ll get to that later). I took home a sample of the Boscia Tsubaki Cleansing Oil-Gel and am hooked. It’s gentle and has a subtle refreshing scent. A tiny bit goes a long way.

Oil Cleanser

“It isn’t going to strip the skin of the natural oils. It’s especially great for someone on an acne medication, someone who has really sensitive skin, or someone battling winter dryness,” describes Amber.  This oil not only cleanses but also serves as a makeup remover and is hydrating.

Truth #2 – “You can fight oil with oil.” Amber admits that because she has oily skin, she was afraid to try oils at first. She explains that our skin recognizes the oil products as being its own oils. If you have oily skin, she says the oils can help make your skin less oily and can help fight clogged pores. If you have dry skin, it can help hydrate. The oils serve as a balancing tool, depending on your needs.

Truth #2

Truth #2

When I mentioned to a few people that I was trying out oil products, the first reaction tended to be “Will it make your skin greasy?” That’s the subject of Truth #3. I confess I had the same concern. Sure enough, my skin seemed to inhale each of the oil products I tried without any greasy shine.

Truth #3

Truth #3

One friend even asked if I started doing something different with my makeup. The only shift I made was adding in oils to my routine.  I think it’s the glow I received from trying out the fresh Seaberry Moisturizing Face Oil, which contains a number of oils including Seaberry, cranberry seed, camilla seed, grape seed and sweet almond. Seaberry oil, which is from Siberia, has long been used as a natural cure. In fact, the co-founder was treated as a young child with Seaberry oil to help heal a burn.

Boosts Radiance

Oils also have anti-aging properties. Some products are more geared in this direction and are packed with anti-oxidants to help diminish the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. If you are looking for an anti-aging oil, be sure to specifically mention that to a Sephora skincare consultant. That’s Truth #4.

Truth #4

Amber reports that she noticed that the oils have helped to soften the appearance of fine lines. She also shares that the Josie Maran line of oil products was inspired after the model met a woman in Morocco who was in her 70s but looked three decades younger. It turns out she was using oil based products.

Josie Maran’s Argan Oil can be used on the face, hands, body (try adding a few drops to your bath) and even scalp. It comes in a light and regular formula.

Available in regular and lighter formulations

GURU TIP: You can use the oils on their own or you can add a few drops to your current moisturizer or face wash. It’s all about experimenting to see what works best for you.

If you take up Sephora on the Dare to Oil challenge, a skincare consultant will help you figure out which ones will be best for you. You can pop in and experience a Skincare Consultation Service with oils and other skincare products and take home a sample.

Plus, the first 10 people to mention the GURU when making ANY purchase at Sephora will receive a deluxe sample bag of oil products. Must be 18 or older. Good while supplies last.

Fresh Faced for Fall at LUSH Fresh Handmade Cosmetics! Plus, gift cards with purchase for 5 lucky readers!

10 Sep

It always amazes me how fast we fall into this season of changing leaves and cooling temps. I hit LUSH Fresh Handmade Cosmetics (Level 2) to check out some products that will get you Fresh Faced for Fall.

Here’s a tip list from LUSH.

  • Instead of a heavy foundation, consider trying one of LUSH’s new skin tints.  Feeling Younger creates an instant full face glow for day or night.

  • Add Charisma for additional  cheek glow. I’ve been hooked on Charisma ever since I tried it out last year.

  • Hold  foundation in place with LUSH’s NEW Emotional Brilliance Translucent Powder. This powder is light and light-reflecting.  It contains jojoba oil, which softens the skin.

  • Have you ever been let down by an eyeliner that looks great when you apply it and halfway through the day smudges and then disappears before the day is done? LUSH has an eyeliner designed with smudge-free staying power in mind. This is the Emotional Brilliance Liquid Eyeliner. It comes in multiple colors.

  • Complete your look with LUSH’s first-ever mascara, Eyes Right Mascara.  It has wheatgrass, which has nourishing and conditioning properties.  According to LUSH, it be used by those with sensitive eyes and contact lens wearers.

  •  At day’s end, after cleansing and toning, consider treating yourself to LUSH’s solid facial serum — Full of Grace.  It’s easy to apply. You rub the serum into your hands.  Apply to your face after it melts. “Antioxidant-rich Portobello mushrooms fight free radicals, reduce inflammation and minimize fine lines. Chamomile blue, rose and tagetes oils are extremely gentle on dry, sensitive skin,” reports LUSH.

EXCITING NEWS!  The first 5 readers of this blog to go into LUSH, make a purchase and mention The Towson Town Center GURU blog, will receive a $10 gift card.  You do need to be 18 or older to participate.

Outfits for Less than $100!

8 Jul

With a little sleuthing, it’s easy to find a statement outfit without breaking the bank — especially at this time of year where you can score markdowns on summer pieces. And, we still have lots of summer left!

I hit Ann Taylor, Francesca’s Collections and dELiA*s  to look for outfits for under $100.  Here are six of my finds. I found a number of items that were majorly marked down and others that are budget friendly at regular price!

At Ann Taylor (Level 4), these cropped paisley pants and textured tank come in at just under $100 on sale, at $49.99 per piece.  The paisley pants were originally $78 and the top started at $88!  On the day I happened to see this outfit, it was an extra 40% off, making the grand total $59.99.

The textured top is a fun addition to the paisley!

I also spotted this flirty green and white floral dress, marked down to $79.99. I added this beaded necklace to the look for another $19.99. On this day, with the extra 40% off, the look totals just $59.99.

There's still money in the budget to add on a necklace!

At Francesca’s Collections (Level 4), I created this outfit for $82! The dress is just $44. I brought in a second bright color with the studded clutch in bright yellow for $38. Studs are on trend for this summer!

You can wear this dress many ways. Try adding on a thick stretch belt or a statement necklace in a contrasting color.

Here’s another find from Francesca’s Collections. It starts with a solid coral dress for $44. Only, there’s nothing plain about it. Check out the open back!  You can add a statement necklace in just about any color. The necklace is $32. That left enough room in the budget to add on a cute pair of shoes, marked down to just $14.99!

The outfits I saw on the day I shopped for looks under $100 are subject to availability and give you an idea of the kinds of treasures you can find. The prices shared are also subject to change. Chances are when you head out on the prowl for bargains, you’ll find sales that hadn’t started yet when I went on my spree!

Get Ready to Take Cover — Hat Season is Just About Here!

29 Oct

I haven’t always been a hat person. I still remember all the years of being forced to wear one to school as a kid.

Now, I can’t get enough of them!

I’m loving the selection of hats throughout the mall. Here are just a few of my favorites!

I spotted this adorable, flower adorned cap at Kokopelli (Level 4).

This magenta one with the unexpected plaid bow also caught my eye at Kokopelli!

Over at Francesca’s Collections (Level 4), I’m crazy for this cobalt one! You can pair it with just about any color winter coat!

Francesca’s Collections

This is a perfect, little-fuss, high-style one to keep tucked away in your purse or glove compartment for when an unexpected chill strikes.  It’s also from Francesca’s Collections.

Francesca’s Collections

Oxblood is the season’s IT color!  Check out this standout way to take cover from Ann Taylor (Level 4).  It also comes in black.

Animal prints remain big too. This cozy find is available at Macy’s.

As you’ve likely guessed, I’m a fan of the floral adorned styles! Note how the petals in this Macy’s find pull in different patterned fabrics.

So, which hat matches your style? I have one of the hats in this post. See if you can take a guess which one?

GURU Style Star: Irene Johnson

27 Sep

Hands down —  this week’s GURU Style Star Irene Johnson gave me the most unexpected answer yet when asked about the most treasured items in her closet! Wait until you read the final part of her response!

Irene’s striking, sleek and sophisticated transitional fall look caught my eye!

She is wearing a black poncho with fringe detail with sweater leggings and sandals. The monochromatic look makes her necklace and Bordeaux colored bag from Louis Vuitton really pop. Her bag is accessorized with a colorful strand of charms.

Irene is also donning a standout necklace. Its fringe look, with its multi strands of 14K white gold chains, parallels the fringe detail on her poncho. The necklace features repurposed diamonds that Irene had from other pieces.

Here is our photo shoot and Q&A.
