Looking to add some sizzle to your style?

Swapping out the sneaks or flats for some height will make an instant impact.  I hit Steve Madden, BCBGMAXAZRIA and Aldo to check out the latest looks.

An animal print, heeled bootie, like the style below from Steve Madden, can elevate a denim and casual, long sleeve tee look and play equally well with a skirt or dress.

There are shoes that become accessories to outfits and outfits that accessorize shoes. There’s no doubt —  a pair like this one deserves to inspire the rest of your outfit. Note the merge of ladylike and mod detail with lace and studs.

Next stop — Aldo. Love the buckle detailing.  An unexpected color like merlot can almost be treated as a neutral. It pairs well with black, brown, grey, navy and a number of other hues. This look almost feels like the merging of a bootie and pump.

GURU Style Star: Allison Melocik

16 Jan

Chances are you won’t guess why Allison Melocik chose to wear this outfit today…

Meet Allison Melocik

Meet Allison Melocik

On the day we met, she and her grandmother were walking through the mall after having lunch at the Cheesecake Factory.  Allison selected the outfit for this day, because it was from her grandmother.

IMG_2045

Allison’s chambray button-down and plaid skirt are from J. Crew. Her tights are from Nordstrom Rack.  Her boots, with exposed zipper trim and red piping, are by Steve Madden and from Macy’s. Allison’s infinity necklace is from Tiffany & Co.  Her bag and watch are both Fossil finds. Allison’s layered bracelets are by Alex & Ani. Some of them are from Nordstrom.

Describe your style.

Whatever I like. Whatever catches my eye. I like patterns.

What are your favorite stores in the mall?

Free People and J. Crew. I do mix stuff from those two locations.

What trends are you enjoying most this season?

I like bright colors. Big Sweaters.

Who is your style icon?

I don’t have one. I just wear what I like. If it catches my eye, I’m going to wear it.

If you could go back in time to any decade for the style, which one would you pick and why?

Probably the 1970s, where they just wore the sweatpants and leg warmers all day. That would be pretty awesome.

“Four Truths and a Dare” at SEPHORA! Plus, a special treat with purchase for 10 people

14 Jan

Forget about Truth OR Dare.

In this case it’s Four Truths AND a Dare and refers to a collection of oils for your skin at Sephora.

Let’s start with the Dare — “Dare to Oil.” If you have oily skin, you may assume that you could never use oil on your skin. That’s one of many misnomers about oil, reports manager, Amber Wilhelm.

DSC_0241

Sephora

A number of cultures around the world have used oil for centuries, shares Amber. When you walk into Sephora, you’ll find a display touting four truths about oils.

Truth #1  — you can cleanse with oil.

Truth #1

Truth #1

It never would have occurred to me that you can wash your face with oil. I had only heard about its moisturizing properties (we’ll get to that later). I took home a sample of the Boscia Tsubaki Cleansing Oil-Gel and am hooked. It’s gentle and has a subtle refreshing scent. A tiny bit goes a long way.

DSC_0242

Oil Cleanser

“It isn’t going to strip the skin of the natural oils. It’s especially great for someone on an acne medication, someone who has really sensitive skin, or someone battling winter dryness,” describes Amber.  This oil not only cleanses but also serves as a makeup remover and is hydrating.

Truth #2 – “You can fight oil with oil.” Amber admits that because she has oily skin, she was afraid to try oils at first. She explains that our skin recognizes the oil products as being its own oils. If you have oily skin, she says the oils can help make your skin less oily and can help fight clogged pores. If you have dry skin, it can help hydrate. The oils serve as a balancing tool, depending on your needs.

Truth #2

Truth #2

When I mentioned to a few people that I was trying out oil products, the first reaction tended to be “Will it make your skin greasy?” That’s the subject of Truth #3. I confess I had the same concern. Sure enough, my skin seemed to inhale each of the oil products I tried without any greasy shine.

Truth #3

Truth #3

One friend even asked if I started doing something different with my makeup. The only shift I made was adding in oils to my routine.  I think it’s the glow I received from trying out the fresh Seaberry Moisturizing Face Oil, which contains a number of oils including Seaberry, cranberry seed, camilla seed, grape seed and sweet almond. Seaberry oil, which is from Siberia, has long been used as a natural cure. In fact, the co-founder was treated as a young child with Seaberry oil to help heal a burn.

Boosts Radiance

Boosts Radiance

Oils also have anti-aging properties. Some products are more geared in this direction and are packed with anti-oxidants to help diminish the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. If you are looking for an anti-aging oil, be sure to specifically mention that to a Sephora skincare consultant. That’s Truth #4.

DSC_0238

Truth #4

Amber reports that she noticed that the oils have helped to soften the appearance of fine lines. She also shares that the Josie Maran line of oil products was inspired after the model met a woman in Morocco who was in her 70s but looked three decades younger. It turns out she was using oil based products.

Josie Maran’s Argan Oil can be used on the face, hands, body (try adding a few drops to your bath) and even scalp. It comes in a light and regular formula.

Available in regular and lighter formulations

Available in regular and lighter formulations

GURU TIP: You can use the oils on their own or you can add a few drops to your current moisturizer or face wash. It’s all about experimenting to see what works best for you.

If you take up Sephora on the Dare to Oil challenge, a skincare consultant will help you figure out which ones will be best for you. You can pop in and experience a Skincare Consultation Service with oils and other skincare products and take home a sample.

Plus, the first 10 people to mention the GURU when making ANY purchase at Sephora will receive a deluxe sample bag of oil products. Must be 18 or older. Good while supplies last.

Read on for our Q&A:

What words describe your style best?

Trendy, fashion forward, chic fashionista.

What is your favorite store at Towson Town Center and why?

Probably  H&M. They always have good sales. I definitely like their styles. You can go from casual to night out.

What are your favorite trends of the moment?

I do like print on print — Mixing paisley with the animal print. I just have a fetish for shoes. The tall boots. I’m really into the over the knee boots right now.

What is the best piece of fashion advice you’re received?

Don’t be afraid to step out of your box. A lot of people don’t like to wear a lot of colors or mix colors.

What is the most treasured item in your closet?

I have some Givenchy boots. They come up above my knee and have a little wedge heel. I love them. They’re versatile; you can wear them in the winter or the spring. You can wear them with a dress, leggings or shorts.

What is your fashion resolution for 2014?

I always buy shoes. I feel like I have a lot of shoes but I don’t have a lot of clothes. To focus more on clothing pieces and not shoes.

New Year’s Eve Looks!

27 Dec

What are you wearing to ring in 2014?

Whether you want to do just a sprinkle in some sparkle or go full glam, you’ll find festive looks around the mall.

I hit Caché and BCBGMAXAZRIA to get some ideas. I’m seeing lots of combinations of black, white, silver and gold along with some bold colors!

At Caché, I spotted these timeless faux fur shrugs. Pair them with anything from a sequined top and jeans to cocktail dresses, like the ones seen here. Shrugs will give you mileage for years to come and add just the warmth needed as you dash from the car to the party, restaurant or club.

Screen Shot 2013-12-26 at 10.13.20 AM

Go glam with a shrug

Turn heads in a bold hue like red! This beaded Blouson dress features a draped neckline and fitted skirt with standout beading.

DSC_0160

Beaded & Bold

I also saw several options with separates, which give you extra flexibility when it comes to just how dressed up you want to get. With a sequined skirt, such as the one below, I would keep the top simple. If you want to sparkle on top, then a solid bottom balances out the look. You can dress these looks up or down with your selection of shoes and accessories. A bootie keeps the looks less formal and sandals or pumps will take it to a dressier level.

DSC_0147

At BCBGMAXAZRIA, you’ll find styles in all lengths! If you usually go for a LBD, how about trying a Little White Dress? Gone are the days when white gets packed up post Labor Day. A solid dress like the white one below provides a canvas with endless opportunities for expression with shoes and accessories.

The longer gowns have an old Hollywood feel. We’re seeing lots of ladylike detail, with fur and lace, along with edgier looks, such as the pairing of the leather moto jacket with the black gown.

BCBGMAXAZRIA

BCBGMAXAZRIA

This season, any length goes. While floor length gowns are typically more formal, we’re seeing the lines blur more often. Shorter dresses can be dressed up with accessories and longer ones can be dressed down, as done with the leather jacket above.

With the two styles below, all eyes will be drawn to the waist line. If you’re not sure what style dress you want to try, consider a fit that highlights a part of your body that makes you feel most confident.

DSC_0161

GURU Tip: It always pays to ask a store associate  for assistance. Some styles take on a completely different look when taken off the hanger.

Coming up this Sunday (12/29), tune into WBAL-TV in the 7 am half hour to see three hot looks for New Year’s Eve! I’ll be back with New Year’s accessories on Monday (12/30).

GURU Style Star: Vanessa Nadolny

19 Dec

I am a magnet for animal prints! I can’t get enough of them. I caught this week’s GURU Style Star, Vanessa Nadolny, out of the corner of my eye as she was headed into Ann Taylor. Right away, I noticed her sophisticated, layered look with animal print, a standout purple bag and more purple highlights with her accessories.

Now to our Q & A.

Describe your style:

Eclectic, a little bit from all eras.

What are you shopping for at the mall today?

I was supposed to be finding my father a sweat suit for Christmas, and here I go in every store I like. I did find my son dark brown khakis in the Gap. It’s all he wants for Christmas. (Her son is 17.)

What trends are you excited about this winter?

I like what’s trendy, but I feel like I’m always a season behind.

What made you pick this outfit today?

I love these boots and belt, and I just pair them with anything…

What are you favorite stores in the mall?

J.Crew, Ann Taylor. I like to mix both of those.

What is the most important fashion lesson you’ve ever learned?

Don’t throw anything out. Mix the old with the new; it alway comes back around.

What is the most treasured item in your closet?

Either my Michael Kors purse collection or these boots.

GURU Style Star: Katrina Brock

12 Dec

If this is what Katrina Brock is wearing on a “rushed day, with the snow throwing her off,”  I can’t imagine what she would put together on another day.

Meet this week’s GURU Style Star!

Meet Katrina Brock

Meet Katrina Brock

Katrina scored her leopard print dress at Bebe, where she works. Her boots are Aldo. Her bag is from Louis Vuitton.

DSC_0121

Katrina describes her style as “very feminine and girly.” She loves prints, colorful and glittery styles and says she goes for clothing that is “just over the top, without being cheesy.” While at work, where she is on her feet, she opts for tall flat boots over heels.

Screen Shot 2013-12-10 at 8.49.56 PM

Once up a time ago, Katrina would save certain outfits for special occasions. Now, she wears them when the mood strikes.

Here’s more of her take on style….

What is your fashion advice for others?

Stay true to yourself.  Don’t be afraid to express yourself with clothing. My mom told me that.

What trends are you excited about?

Honestly, I don’t really follow trends If I like it, I get it. I always wear tall boots. I always have.  I love anything with faux fur, anything with sequins.

What do you enjoy about shopping during the  holiday season?

Everything! The glitz — I wish it was like this all year long with the satins, the deep colors…

If I gave you $2000 and sent you on a shopping spree at Towson Town Center, where would you go and what would you buy?

A Louis Vuitton bag.  It’s  my absoute favorite store and I would purchase another handbag.  I try to get bags that don’t go out of style.  Or something from my store (Bebe)  — not just because I work there. They have everything that I love.
